Inauguration play: Betting big on Trump's big day

By Terry Oldreal

Given all the post–election chaos (near-government shutdowns, minor issues with Matt Gaetz, threats to annex Canada, etc.) coupled with the fact that Joe Biden is an invalid, it's easy to forget that Donald Trump isn't already the President.

But this Monday, January 20th, Trump will be officially sworn in. And in honor of the historic occasion, Kalshi is offering a full slate of inauguration markets to bet on. Let's take a look at a few, and see what Kalshi traders are forecasting for Trump's big day.

This is an opinion, not financial advice. The views expressed are those of the author, who uses a pseudonym and cannot trade on the platform.

Who will be at Trump's inauguration?

Elon's odds of attending are currently 98%.

Lots of big names are planning to attend Trump's special day. Since Trump and Musk are now roommates, it's probably no surprise that Elon's odds of attending are at 98%.

But other well-known figures are still on the fence, including Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse (46%), podcaster Joe Rogan (59%), and noted Turkophile Eric Adams (46%), among many others (see the full list here).

However, a legendary matriarchal figure well-known in DC political circles did just RSVP as a no.

No, not Lisa Ann...

...Nancy Pelosi.

How many people will view Trump's inauguration?

Due to a previous engagement, Nancy Pelosi can't make it.

Yes, Nancy Pelosi has decided to opt out. Perhaps it was due to her recent hip injury. Or maybe it has more to do with the fact that everything she spent her whole life fighting for is getting ground into dust.

Either way, she'll be at home, watching on TV, just like millions of other people. But how many people will be watching?

Right now, Kalshi traders think there's a 74% chance Trump's inauguration viewership will top the 30,635,000 who tuned in for his first inauguration.

They also think there's a 48% chance he'll surpass Biden's inauguration, which was watched by 33,760,000 (or so the liberal media would have us believe).

Who will speak during Trump's inauguration ceremony?

Regardless of whether you're attending in person or watching from home, you're sure to be on the edge of your seat anxiously awaiting what Senate Majority Leader John Thune has to say.

Well, I've got some bad news: there's only a 6% chance that Thune will speak at the inauguration. Sad.

Your odds of hearing from Elon Musk are somewhat better at 19%. And there's a nearly one-in-three chance you'll hear from Kalshi's newest hire, Strategic advisor Donald Trump Jr.

I don't want to complain, but the dude has been here less than a week, and he's already taking a day off?

Sure, it's a big day for his dad. But last year Kalshi made me skip my dad's funeral to write about interest-rate cuts. So forgive me if I'm less than sympathetic!

How many Jan 6th protestors will Trump pardon on Inauguration Day?

Longtime ultra-MAGA Mark Zuckerberg readies his bear spray.

One of President-Elect Trump's campaign promises was to pardon/release his supporters who were arrested during the January 6th Capitol riot back in 2021.

At first, this plan seemed pretty controversial. But then eggs got really expensive, so now the majority of Americans are cool with it.

How many "hostages" will be pardoned?

The current forecast is over 1,000 in Trump's first 100 days. But on Inauguration Day itself, the current forecast is for 260.

Which companies will donate to Trump's inauguration?

Amazon founder and noted MAGA Jeff Bezos puts a woke anti-Trump protester in her place.

Look, inaugurations are expensive. You have to pay for security... and chairs... and probably a lot of other stuff. Luckily, corporate America is here to help by donating millions to Trump's inauguration fund!

For example, Amazon recently donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund, and will stream the event live on Amazon Prime, which amounts to another $1 million in-kind donation.

Will other companies do the right thing and open their wallets to this noble cause?

Our traders think there's a 90% chance Alphabet (aka Google) will board the Trump train, and an 85% chance Microsoft will donate as well.

Unfortunately, traders think there's only a 14% chance NVIDIA makes a donation.

With that miserly attitude, good luck getting Trump's help with keeping China out of Taiwan, Jensen.

How many Executive Orders will Trump issue on Day 1?

Rob Schneider watches as President Trump signs an executive order requiring every American under 40 to learn who Rob Schneider is.

Senate majority whip John Barrasso recently claimed that Trump would sign a "blizzard" of executive orders related to the border and the economy, calling it a strategy of "shock and awe." But how many of those orders will come on day one?

Biden issued 17 on his first day in office. So personally, I think we'll see at least 18 (that's just my opinion, and not trading advice)!

But our traders' consensus forecast is currently 12.9.

That said, if you're thinking Trump is going to go big, we recently opened a second executive order market with higher strikes, so be sure to check it out.
