About
Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union allows a member state to voluntarily and unilaterally withdraw from the EU. The country must notify the European Council, which then sets guidelines for a withdrawal agreement concluded by the Council of the European Union with the European Parliament's consent. EU treaties cease to apply either upon the agreement's entry into force or two years after notification unless extended. A withdrawn country can reapply for EU membership through the standard accession procedure.
