Methodology

How the Kalshi Power Score works

65% live Kalshi prices, 35% schedule-adjusted on-court performance, in a single 0–100 rating.
24%Playoff qualificationKalshi's price on this team reaching the playoffs, scaled across the league before it is blended. Each leg settles as its team is in or out, and keeps its settled value.
16%Conference titleIts price to win the East or the West — how deep into the playoffs the market expects it to go.
25%NBA titleIts price to win the championship, scaled so a title board that sits mostly in single digits still counts its full weight.Rises to 35% once the playoff field is set.
35%On-court performanceWin percentage, net rating (points per 100 possessions), the Pythagorean win rate and the last 10 games, each adjusted for schedule.Eases to 25% once the playoff field is set.
1 · Each market, scaled100 × (price − league low) ÷ (league high − league low)Every market family is put on the same 0–100 footing first: the best-priced team in it reads 100 and the least-priced 0. A title board where most of the league trades under 5% would otherwise carry a fraction of its weight, however the weights were written.
2 · The market half24% playoffs + 16% conference + 25% titleThe scaled families are blended at their weights, and the blend is scaled across the league once more, so the market half also runs 0–100. Both ends are re-pinned every update, so a move by the team at either end moves everybody.
3 · The on-court half40% win% + 30% net rating + 20% Pythagorean + 10% last 10Net rating is points per 100 possessions rather than raw margin, because pace stretches and shrinks margins in basketball. The Pythagorean term uses the NBA exponent of 13.5. Each input is scaled across the league, and the blend is scaled again and floored at 12.
4 · Schedule adjustmentmetric + 50 × (opponent win % ÷ league mean − 1)Each on-court input is re-centred on who the team has actually played, then scaled across the league again. Early on, opponents' records are regressed toward .500 with 5 games of prior, since a first-week opponent's record is a sample of one or two.

Power rankings built from prices, not pundits

Most NBA power rankings are one writer’s judgment, published once a week. This one starts with what people are actually willing to risk money on. 65% of the Power Score is live Kalshi prices — the chance a team reaches the playoffs, the chance it wins its conference and the chance it wins the NBA title — each scaled across the league and then blended, so the best-priced team sets the top of that half and the least-priced the bottom. The other 35% is the part no market prices: what the team has done on the court. Win percentage, net rating (points per 100 possessions), the Pythagorean win rate and the last 10 games, each re-centred on the schedule it was played against, so a hot start against a soft schedule is not mistaken for the same thing as a hard-won one.The result is a 0–100 score that moves when prices move and when results land — not when a columnist does. Nobody votes, and the same arithmetic runs for all 30 teams every time the exchange recomputes it.

FAQ

NBA power ranking questions

What are the Kalshi NBA Power Rankings?
All 30 NBA teams ranked by the Kalshi Power Score, a 0–100 rating built from live prediction-market prices and on-court results rather than expert ballots. 65% of it is Kalshi's playoff, conference and title market prices; the remaining 35% is what the team has done on the court, adjusted for the schedule it did it against.
How is the Kalshi Power Score calculated?
Playoff qualification carries 24% of the score, the conference title 16% and the NBA title 25%. Each of those markets is scaled across the league first — the best-priced team reads 100, the least-priced 0 — then blended, and the blend is scaled again. The remaining 35% is an on-court composite: 40% win percentage, 30% net rating, 20% the Pythagorean win expectation and 10% the last 10 games, each adjusted for strength of schedule.
Which NBA team is ranked number one right now?
The San Antonio Spurs, with a Power Score of 91.6 and an on-court score of 76.0. Kalshi prices them at 23% to win the NBA title.
What is the on-court score?
A 0–100 measure of what a team has done this regular season, independent of any price. It blends win percentage, net rating (points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions, which strips out pace), the Pythagorean win expectation at the NBA exponent of 13.5, and win percentage over the last 10 games. Each input is re-centred on the records of the opponents the team has faced, and the composite is floored at 12. It starts once every team has played a game; preseason and NBA Cup final games are not counted.
Why are season win totals not part of the score?
Because they would count the same thing twice. A win-total price is mostly the wins a team has already banked plus a forecast of the rest, and the banked wins are already in the on-court half. Win-total books are also the thinnest of the NBA futures markets, so the playoff, conference and title boards carry the market half instead.
Why can a team move without playing?
Kalshi prices react to injuries, trades and results around the league. Because those prices are 65% of the score, a team can move before it plays — and because every market and on-court input is scaled across the league, a team also moves when the teams at the top or bottom of a board do.
How often are the NBA Power Rankings updated?
The exchange recomputes the rankings every fifteen minutes from the latest Kalshi prices and results, and this page refreshes within a few minutes of that. The latest update time appears at the top of the page — currently Monday, Nov 2, 2026 · 12:52 PM ET.
