METHOD
How the NBA playoff field works
8 clubs reach the playoffs from each conference, but only 6 of those places are settled by record. Seeds 7 through 10 go to the play-in tournament, which awards the last two — so a club can be neither in the postseason nor eliminated, and that band between is what this page exists to show.
The play-in is the reason the NBA needs three bands where football and baseball need two. 7 hosts 8 and the winner takes the seventh seed; 9 hosts 10 and the loser is eliminated; the loser of 7-v-8 then plays the winner of 9-v-10 for the eighth. Seeds 7 and 8 need one win to get through, seeds 9 and 10 need two.
The playoff column is the price of a Kalshi contract on that club reaching the postseason. It pays 100¢ if the club gets there, so its price in cents reads directly as the market’s implied chance in percent — including for clubs the standings currently place outside the field.

How many NBA teams make the playoffs?
Sixteen — 8 from each conference. The top 6 in each qualify directly on record, and the last two places are decided by the play-in tournament among the clubs finishing 7th to 10th.
What does it mean to be in the play-in?
Neither in the playoffs nor out of them. A club finishing 7th through 10th plays for one of the last two postseason places: 7 and 8 need a single win, 9 and 10 need two, and two of the four are eliminated without reaching the first round.
Which team outside the field is most likely to get in?
Charlotte Hornets, whom Kalshi prices at 38% to reach the postseason despite sitting outside the play-in band today. That is a market price, not a Kalshi forecast.
