NHL Clinching Scenarios 2026-27

Who has clinched a playoff place, who is out, and how many more points each club needs to clinch — worked out under the NHL’s division-and-wild-card format, not against eighth place.
2026-27 · As the standings standUpdated Tuesday, Oct 27, 2026 · 7:17 PM ET
Where these numbers come from: Worked out from the standings and every regular-season game left on the schedule; the next result can change any number. While games are left, a club is called in or out only once points alone settle it. The league breaks ties on games played, regulation wins and more, so it can declare a clinch a game or two sooner; its own mark is shown beside ours.

THE FORMAT

Why the NHL has no single magic number

  1. Each conference sends eight clubs to the playoffs: the top three in each of its two divisions, then the two best records among everyone else — the wild cards.
  2. So eighth place in the conference is not the line. When one division is strong, its fourth- and fifth-placed clubs can take both wild cards; its sixth-placed club then misses even if it is sixth in the whole conference, while the other division’s third-placed club goes through from ninth.
  3. Put the other way, a club misses only when three clubs of its own division finish ahead of it and at least two more of the conference’s clubs outside the division places do too.
METHOD

How to read this page

Clinched: the club goes through in every way the rest of the season can go — even losing every game left in regulation, while the clubs chasing it take every point they can, two from each win and one from each overtime loss between them.

Eliminated: even winning every game left, and with every other result going its way, the club cannot finish in a playoff place.

Clinch: the fewest more points that put a club through whatever else happens. Its own games count both ways — every point it does not take from an opponent goes to that opponent, and even a win in overtime gives the loser one.

Out below: with fewer more points than this, a club is out whatever else happens; with this many it still has a way through if the other results go its way.

While games are left, a club level on points with another is counted as finishing behind it when deciding a clinch, and ahead of it when deciding an elimination, so neither is called before points alone settle it. Once a conference has no games left, a tie still standing across a line is settled by the league’s own standings, which carry its tiebreakers.

FAQ

Questions

Which NHL teams have clinched a playoff spot?
None yet. The closest is the Carolina Hurricanes, who clinch with 131 more points whatever else happens, from 71 games left.
Which NHL teams are eliminated from the playoffs?
None yet: every club can still reach a playoff place in the 2026-27 season.
What is the NHL magic number?
In most sports it is the wins plus rival losses that clinch a place. The NHL’s division-and-wild-card format has no single line to count against, so this page gives each club the points that clinch a place whatever else happens, and the points below which it is out whatever else happens.
What do x, y, z, p and e mean in the NHL standings?
x: clinched playoff berth. y: clinched division. z: clinched conference. p: clinched the Presidents’ Trophy, the league’s best record. e: eliminated from playoff contention.
